Reflections: Ar-Rahman

Each week in our Friday night halaqa we discuss one of Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala)’s Names or Attributes. Last Friday we continued our disucssion of Ar-Rahman, “The Most Merciful”.

Please share your thoughts about ways you find this Name reflected in your daily life. Perhaps, by sharing our thoughts and reflections, we can inspire each other to be more aware during everyday life, and increase our faith.

“And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them. (Quran, Al-A’raf: 180)

“Allah has ninety-nine names, one-hundred minus one, and whoever enumerates them will go to Paradise.” (Hadith recorded in Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 50, Number 894).
Alhamdulillah, we are excited to announce the start of our long-awaited new series, “The Most Beautiful Names“. Starting Sunday, September 14th, 1/2 hour before maghrib, and continuing every Sunday during Ramadaan inshaAllah.

Each night discover new meaning in one of the Names or Attributes of Allah, and learn how it relates to one’s everyday life situations. Move from theory to practice, by gaining a deeper understanding and working knowledge of these Most Beautiful Names!

Zakah Workshop 2008

“I want to pay my zakah, but I’m not sure how to calculate it.” Does this sound familiar? If so then join our informative Zakah Workshop on Saturday, Sept 6th from 9:00am to 12:30pm Saturday, Sept 13th from 10:30am to 2:15pm (new date and time) . Led by Imam Safi Khan, we will guide you step-by-step through calculating your financial obligation.

To register, email classes@LearnAboutIslam.org and write “Zakah Workshop Registration” in the subject line. Registration required.

This class will be held at Dar-us-Salaam, 5301 Edgewood Rd, College Park, MD. Directions are here.

Cost: This class is offered for free. The suggested donation is $15, to support our educational programs.

Preparing for Ramadhaan

Join us on Saturday, August 9th for Preparing for Ramadhaan, the second class in our Summer Intensives series. In this special session we will learn the essentials for a fulfilling and beneficial Ramadan. Refresh your knowledge of what to do and what to avoid, and learn tips for enriching your Ramadan. Get the most out of Ramadan this year!

Time: 10:30am – 6:30pm
Location: Dar-us-Salaam cafeteria
Instructor: Safi Khan, Imam of Dar-us-Salaam
Cost: Free. Suggested donation of $40 to support our educational programs.
Lunch: Several halal restaurants are in the area. Lunch delivery service provided for those who place orders by 11am.
Childcare: Please make prior arrangements.

Janazah Certification Workshop

A Summer Intensive

When: Saturday, July 19, 10:30am – 6:30pm
Where: Dar-us-Salaam, College Park, MD

This class will cover in-depth the details of death in Islam, preparations for the funeral, the proper burial and shrouding of the dead and other topics such as preparing a wasiyyah (a will).

A Certificate of Competency will be presented upon successful completion of written test and practical exam, and qualifies one to assist with janazah preparations (washing and shrouding). Those who receive certification will be eligible to be on-call after a death and to help with the janazah.

The class is free. It will be led by Br. Safi Khan, Imam of Dar-us-Salaam. Janazah kits will be available for purchase for $60. To register, please email: janazah at LearnAboutIslam.org. Registration is required.

Please note the following important information:

1) Registration is required. If you have not registered, please send an email to janazah at LearnAboutIslam.org and include your full name along with the names of any family members you would also like to register.

2) Youth ages 14 and older are welcome to take this class. Those younger than 14 are not permitted in the class, due to the subject matter and hands-on nature of this workshop. Please make alternate arrangements.

3) Childcare is not available for this class. Please make alternate arrangements.

4) The certification exam will be offered 2-4 weeks after the workshop, in order to allow time to study. Detailed information will be sent after the class, to those who have registered. There is no charge for the exam.

5) If you would like to take the certification exam without taking the workshop, you are welcome to do so. Please email janazah at LearnAboutIslam.org to register for the exam only. Exam details will be sent to you after the class.

6) If you have any janazah-related questions in advance, please email them as soon as possible to janazah at LearnAboutIslam.org so that we can try to incorporate the most common ones in the class material.

Parenting Workshop Series

Dar-us-Salaam is offering a series of Parenting Workshops this summer, in order to help parents raise their children in an Islamic way, Insha Allah. There is no fee for these workshops, so everyone is encouraged to come, and to invite other parents as well.

The first workshop of this series will be held on Saturday, June 28, from 10:30 am – 12:45 pm. This workshop is titled “Ibrahim – The Father”, where Br. Safi Khan will talk about Ibrahim ‘alayhi as-salaam as a father; how he instilled Islamic values in his children, and how we can learn from him as a father.
